Central Chile has been struck by a 5.9 magnitude about 129 kilometres north north-west of Concepcion, but there were no initial reports of any damage.

A quake struck in the same region a year ago with a massive 8.8 magnitude quake and the ensuing tsunamis that battered Chile a year ago, ravaging towns and roads and killing hundreds.

“There have been no reports of any injuries or damage to infrastructure,” a spokeswoman for state emergency office Onemi said.

“A tsunami has been ruled out.”
