Mayan Calendar: Doomsday!
Dec 23rd
21st December 2012 marks the conclusion of a vast, 5,125-year cycle in the Mayan calendar. At the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza, Buddhists, pagan nature worshippers, druids and followers of Aztec and Maya religious traditions are gathered to offer prayers. For them Dec. 21 sparked celebration of the birth of a new and better age.
Only a single Maya text, known as Tortuguero Monument 6 discovered in Tabasco, Mexico, refers to December 21, 2012, as the end of the Bak’tun thirteen. In the entire body of literature of the classical Maya period (250AD-900AD) no other text refers to December 21, 2012, as a significant turning point.
But it doesn’t mean we’ve escaped the clutches of doomsday. We’ll be facing a More >

Winter Solstice 2011: On December 22 the Shortest Day of the Year!
Dec 21st
The winter solstice is celebrated around the world as the beginning of the return of the sun, and darkness turning into light. In 2011, the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere will occur on Dec. 22, 2011 at 12:30 a.m. EST. Officially the first day of winter, the winter solstice occurs when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. This is the longest night of the year, meaning that despite the cold winter, the days get progressively longer after the winter solstice until the summer solstice in 2012. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, it marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
The word “solstice” comes from the Latin word “solstitum”, that means the Sun standing still. This is reference to the fact that the Sun no longer appears to be moving either further north or south on the sky and afterward starts to reverse More >
Plane Crash on New Jersey Highway!
Dec 21st
A plane crash on new Jersey highway killed 5 people. On Tuesday morning a small plane heading for Georgia spiraled out of control and crashed on a major New York-area highway, hitting a wooded median and scattering wreckage across the road. All five people aboard, including two investment bankers, were killed, but no one on the ground was injured.
Wreckage was scattered over at least a half-mile, with a section found lodged in a tree of a home about a quarter-mile away, near a highway entrance ramp. The crash closed both sides of the busy highway for hours, though several lanes were open again in time for the evening rush hour. More >

Does Jan Lokpal Bill by our beloved Anna Hazare is really going to make any difference??
Aug 23rd
Indian politics and social issues are in an interesting process these days. The Jan Lokpal bill is proposed by Anna Hazare, who belongs to an NGO in Maharashtra, India. Anna Hazare is a well known activist and a recipient of Padma Bhushan Award in 1992. Through out his life the ex-militia fought for many social issues like prohibition of alcohol, removal of untouchability and development of grain bank, watershed program, milk production, education, conducted collective marriages and gram sabhas for the people.
With this type of back ground as the social activist Anna is the right person to lead a cause like anti corruption bill. People has no doubt of intentions and sincerity regarding Lokpal bill as in the early 2000s Anna Hazare led a movement in Maharashtra state which forced the state government to pass a stronger Maharashtra Right to Information Act. This Act was later considered as the base document for the Right to Information Act 2005 (RTI), enacted by the Union Government. It also ensured that the President of India assented to this new Act.
Now Anna is protesting for the approval of Jan Lokpal bill. Hazare initiated a Satyagraha movement for passing a stronger anti-corruption Lokpal (ombudsman) bill in the Indian Parliament as conceived in the Jan Lokpal Bill (People’s Ombudsman Bill).
The Jan Lokpal Bill was drafted earlier by N. Santosh Hegde, former justice of the Supreme Court of India and Lokayukta of Karnataka, Prashant Bhushan, a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court and Arvind Kejriwal, a social activist along with members of the India Against Corruption movement. This draft bill incorporated more stringent provisions and wider power to the Lokpal More >

The crew of Atlantis on Tuesday bade a bittersweet goodbye to the International Space Station ending the final visit by a space shuttle to ISS. The crew of Atlantis began deorbit procedures from the ISS at 0628 GMT about 350 kilometers above the Pacific Ocean to begin its final return to Earth. “Thanks so much for hosting us. It’s a great station, and it’s been an absolute pleasure,” Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson said of his crew’s eight-day stay at the ISS.
“We’ll miss you guys. Godspeed, soft landing and we’ll see you back on Earth in the fall,” space station crewmember Ronald Garan, a Nasa flight engineer, said as Atlantis floated away. “It’s been an incredible ride,” said Ferguson of the final shuttle mission. “We will never forget the role that the space shuttle played in (the station’s) creation,” he said. “Farewell ISS, make us proud.”

Somalia: United Nations declared Famine in Somalia
Jul 20th
Somalia regions like southern Bakool and lower shabelle has been declared as the famine inflicted regions and appealed for 300 million dollars help. According to UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mark Bowden, the people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
“If humanitarian agencies do not intervene now, famine will spread to all eight regions of southern Somalia within two months, due to poor harvests and infectious disease outbreaks,” Bowden warned.
As per Bowden there are around 310, 000 acutely malnourished children in southern Somalia who need urgent help. Consecutive droughts and the ongoing conflicts have affected the country in the last few years has made it extremely difficult for agencies to operate and access communities in the south of the country. Somalia is the country worst affected by a severe drought that has ravaged large swaths of the Horn of Africa, leaving an estimated 11 million people in the region in need of humanitarian assistance.
